Golfcourse.com Review: This course opened 6/98, and is the 15th TPC in the growing network of award- winning facilities. It was built on the 230-acre country estate of the late J. Seward Johnson of Johnson & Johnson Co., and his widow, who provided the property for the development of the club. The layout has 80 feet of elevation change and is framed by a variety of mature trees. The fairways have a variety of widths, some let you break out the driver while others will force you to keep it in the bag. The signature hole is #18, a 549-yard, par 5, which drops 80 feet down to the green. The clubhouse was the Johnson's 46,000-square foot neoclassical mansion, built in the early '70s. It underwent an extensive 18 month transformation into a full-service facility. Significant changes included the conversion of the kitchen to commercial use, constructing the golf shop on what had been a garden, converting an exercise room and dance studio into a men's locker room, and creating a women's locker room out of what had been 3 guest suites. The mansion is adorned by a variety of gardens, including the bocci court surrounded by expansive, terraced gardens and a rose garden with reflecting pool. The estate also includes an orchid house that grows flowers year-round. Mrs. Johnson also contributed 18th century European paintings, handmade tapestries and other valuable artifacts that adorn her former residence.
