Golfcourse.com Review: This links-style course has plenty of undulation that will cause uneven lies. The course wanders through Raspberry Plain, which was established in the 18th Century as one of the most productive plantations in all of Virginia. A water hazard comes into play on just 1 hole, but there are stacked-sod sand bunkers throughout the design. Wildlife occasionally seen on the course includes deer or fox. Rock outcroppings are popular in this area, so are Civil War era stone walls, which were reconstructed on holes #3 and #9.
From the website: The plantation's natural features — rolling terrain, native hardwoods, meandering streams, natural rock outcroppings and spectacular vistas — were all incorporated into the 18-hole layout. The most dramatic and formidable feature at Raspberry Falls is the Scottish style stacked-sod bunkers. Inspired by the great links courses of the British Isles, they give Raspberry Falls a very distinctive look.
Other Area Tracks To Play: Try Raspberry's sister course, Old Hickory GC (www.golfoldhickory.com, 703-580-6348) in Lake Ridge/Woodbridge, VA.
Best Bar Nearby: Per the Washington Post, "A course's pedigree is not a way to judge the clubhouse. While Raspberry Falls Golf Club's fairways and bunkers were designed by the great Gary Player, the Leesburg club's bar and lounge has all the charm of a hotel lobby -- well, a hotel lobby with a prominently displayed stuffed fox."
