May 2011- The New York City Issue

New York City Golf Weekend- Big golf in the Big Apple. Sure, logistics are a nuisance, but where else can you play a U.S. Open course in the morning and do anything that crosses your mind that night?

Fat Guy's NYC Pizza Golf Weekend- I recently got enamored with the idea of doing a full weekend in New York City doing nothing but tasting some of the country's best pizza (and playing golf, of course).

Fat Guy's NYC Steakhouse & Martini Golf Weekend- If Vegas has an argument towards being the World Capital Of Steakhouses, New York would certainly have to be the Grandaddy Of The World Capital Of Steakhouses. You almost have to splurge on a big-time NYC steakhouse once in your life, just to educate your steak palate and cross it off your bucket list.

Fat Guy's Atlantic City NJ Golf Weekend- The hungry heart of South Jersey, Atlantic City, experienced a hip-factor renaissance at the turn of the New Millennium, attracting a younger, more upscale crowd with the development of new casinos, hotels, shopping areas, golf courses, clubs, and restaurants that had the guys from the Rat Pack smiling in their graves. However, when the recent legalization of gambling in nearby Pennsylvania and Delaware combined with the economic downturn, many A.C. casinos, restaurants, and golf courses now find themselves struggling for revenue. Translation: Now is a good time to get some great deals of an AC golf weekend (and do it before some of the courses below may close for good).

Course Of The Month- Timber Creek GC, Friendswood TX (just outside of Houston). I had a blast playing this course. Three varied nines make for fun combinations for high-handicappers looking for good value playability or low handicappers looking for a ball-striking challenge.

Tour Spotlight- TPC Four Seasons, Irving TX (near Dallas). Golf Digest's latest review.

Fat Guy Bar / Golf Trail- Fat Guy's Florida Keys Bar & Golf Trail. The Florida Keys are a great destination no matter how you slice it. Partiers, chillaxers, outdoorsy types, chaise lounge addicts, singles, families, young, old, straight, gay, bi, and everyone in between can find something about the Key West vibe that works for them. Part of what makes The Keys great is the feeling of freedom (and dropping of hometown inhibitions) that comes from its' Caribbean aura and remote location. You can't get there without at least a 3 hour road trip across Route 1 Dixie Highway from Miami (or 8-plus hours from the Florida border and points north). Any road trip that takes you through Key Largo and Islamorada to a spot where you really shouldn't be during hurricane season is easily worth a week's vacation. While a Florida Keys road trip is more apt to be about Rum Runners, key lime pie, Buffet tunes, and watching sunsets than it is about golf (there's only one 18-hole course in the Keys--Key West GC), you can still pair a couple rounds with a few days in paradise.
