Legend has it that President William Howard Taft, well known for being the fattest President in U.S. history, scored a 27 on the par-4 17th one day in 1911, which features a green-front bunker 35 feet high covering the entire hillside.

Golfcourse.com Review: This is the 8th oldest course in the U.S. The terrain is hilly and the greens are small. This course was designed with the Scottish links-style in mind. Nine holes were built on open meadows at the foot of the mountains. The wind frequently comes into play, so proper club selection becomes an important part of the game. The signature hole is #8, a 435-yard, par 4, requiring a tee shot up a dogleg left fairway, then an uphill approach shot to the green. In addition, a creek meanders down the entire left side of the fairway, and the green is sloped from back to front. Walter Hagen played this course in the 1920's and rated this hole amongst the toughest eighteen holes he had ever played. "Golf Digest" rated this course as the 4th "Best Public Course" in the state for 1996. In addition, "GOLFWEEK" rated it 100th among "America's 100 Best Classical Courses" for 1997.

Where To Grub: Per Charles Slack in the book Blue Fairways, Island Chowder House on Cottage St. offers a boiled Maine lobster for under $10, with melted butter and all the fixins.
