Fat Guy Golf Monthly

November 2010

This is just a spot to highlight a few pages on the site every month, based on such whims as where I've been playing lately, good seasonal destinations, where the Tour's playing, and other favorites.

Bandon Dunes GR- Bandon, OR

There's never a lack of info on the new Shangri-La of American destination golf, so I've gathered a pretty comprehensive guide on how to do Bandon.  It'll be a pricey weekend no matter how you slice it, as the long flight/drive makes playing all 4-1/2 of Bandon's world-class links courses a must.  To make it more affordable, Golf Digest says November is the best combo of off-season pricing and low-dice-roll shoulder season weather, with golf package discounts of up to 55%. Plus the cool weather will make it easier to take advantage of the lower 36-hole greens fees, but remember Bandon is walking-only, so you may actually have to get in shape for this trip.

Fat Guy's N'Awlins, LA-

New Orleans was Sin City before Vegas was even an itch in Bugsy Seagal's wallet.  Even though Mardi Gras is still 4 months off, Bourbon Street is still a trip even on a random weekend in November.  I've been there once and done a bunch of research, so here's the skinny on where to booze, grub, and play in The Big Easy.

Fat Guy's Richmond, VA-

  Independence GC

With golf season fading fast in the Northeast, Richmond is just far enough south to stretch the season out by a few weeks. And it's not a bad drive from Harrisburg, Philly, Wilmington, Baltimore, DC, Wheeling, or even Pittsburgh (just make sure to avoid the 495 Beltway around DC during weekday rush hours).  I lived in Richmond for 2 years in the '90's, so I still know my way around a little.  You'll find a surprisingly Southern city for one so close to the Mason-Dixon line... don't forget it was once the capital of the Confederacy.

Guy Movie Golf Weekend- Tin Cup (Tubac AZ)

The reason most golf pros become golf pros.

Follow in Roy McAvoy's footsteps at Tubac GR, and see how many balls you plunk in Tin Cup Lake going for the green in two on Tubac's famed par-5 4th hole.

Fat Guy's Course Of The Month- Prestwick GC, Myrtle Beach SC

A great Pete Dye layout you've probably never heard of, located in Golf Mecca Southeast. TravelGolf.com says the best time of year to play Myrtle is between Thanksgiving and New Year's, for a great combo of off-season golf package rates and playable jacket weather.

Tour Spotlight- The Breakers Resort, Palm Beach FL

Home of November's ADT Skills Challenge, this classic seaside resort exudes a 1930's class. Modern world-class pool and spa complexes are a great side dish to The Breakers' two  manicured courses, both of which have been updated in the New Millenium.

If you're traveling outside the U.S. and want to track down a good golf course, WorldGolf is the ultimate authority.

They're the only times when this kinda thing is allowed on a golf course.
