When To Go: Darlington Nascar races are usually held in mid-May at one of the trickiest, most dangerous tracks on the circuit. Check the schedule at www.nascar.com.

Further Attractions: Nearby Cheraw SC is a former cotton town and the hometown of jazz great Dizzie Gillespie. The house he grew up in no longer exists, but the site has been converted into a small park with musical sculpture. Check out the Old St. David's Church, used by soldiers in both the Revolutionary and Civil wars. In the fall, the cotton still blossoms before harvest, particularly around Bennettsville. Or hit the South Carolina Cotton Museum in Bishopville. Get fresh peaches from McLeod Farms in McBee.
