Fat Guy Golf Monthly

August 2010

This is just a spot to highlight a few pages on the site every month, based on such whims as where I've been playing lately, good seasonal destinations, where the Tour's playing, and other favorites.

August Destinations-

Fat Guy's Ocean City MD Golf Weekend-

Possibly the purest Americana boardwalk beach town in the country, and a great golfing destination as well.  Plenty of windy bayside golf wound through marshlands and maritime forest, an authentic links on the grounds of the former horse farm where Seabisquit was trained, good value tracks, steamed Maryland hardshell blue crabs, fun beach bars, and two-and-a-half miles of classic boardwalk rides, games, fryer food, and t-shirt shops.  Fat Guy just spent a week's vacation here, so here's my latest take on my 30-year summer stomping grounds.

Finger Lakes NY Golf Weekend-

Cooler summer temps and surprisingly good golf.  Head north to find out why the PGA Tour has been coming here for 40 years.  I took an overnight biz trip up here a couple months ago, and have been kicking myself for not doing a little research and taking my sticks along, ever since. Banff Alberta Golf Weekend-

An upscale golf adventure.  Perfect summer weather, jaw dropping mountain vistas, classic championship golf, and a grand hotel that looks like it's straight outta The Shining.

Birmingham AB BBQ Golf Weekend-

Two great things that go great together:  Goff and BBQ.

Fat Guy Course Of The Month-

Broad Run Golfer's Club- West Chester, PA (Philly burbs)

My home course, in a great little college town.

Tour Spotlight-

Whistling Straights- Kohler, WI

Site of the upcoming PGA Championship, and a definite bucket list track.  Here's some good research on how to do Whistling Straights right.

Guy Movie Trip-

Caddyshack Golf Weekend- Ft. Lauderdale/Boca Raton, FL

This month marks the 30th anniversary of the release of this cinematic classic.  Here's Fat Guy's take on how to recapture the Caddyshack mayhem, either on location in Florida or without leaving home, plus trivia and an aytpical Golf Digest article from the archives.

Fat Guy Links Of The Month-

Golf Vacation Insider- "Where To Play, Where To Stay, and What To Pay"

While Fat Guy Golf is obviously more of a hobby than a profession, these guys apparently take golf vacations for a living (Where do I apply?!), and it shows.  Good original golf travel articles and great course/destination reviews from their sister site Golf Odyssey (and they do it all on their own dime--no comps--so they're not afraid to trash a joint... wow, remember integrity?).  But the annual price for their newsletter ($150) seems pretty hefty for anyone who isn't taking at least 2 or 3 serious golf trips a year (although they claim their tips make it break-even in savings over 2-3 rounds of vacation golf and overnight stays).
