Fat Guy Golf Monthly

This is just a spot to highlight a few pages on the site every month, based on such whims as where I've been playing lately, good seasonal destinations, where the Tour's playing, and other favorites.

April 2011

Change Orders, Golf Digest 4/11

#16 in 1934     #16 in 2011

Every April, every golfer's thoughts turn towards the springtime epicenter of the golfing universe, Augusta National.  And thanks to former Chairman Cliff Roberts, the course at Augusta has always been a work in progress, constantly striving to be the best in the world and the most challenging 18 holes to pros (and golf technology) that get better every year.  Here's a great article from this month's Golf Digest that displays the chronology of all the changes to each hole at Augusta.

Fat Guy's Masters Weekend

Here's a collection of cool facts and trivia about Augusta and The Masters that'll help get you properly hyped until that quiet guitar music finally arrives on your plasma.

Golf Drinks

I'm surprised the category of drinks inspired by golf isn't a little bigger.  Golf and booze go together like chicken wings and Buffalo sauce, so you would think that for as much time as golfers spend at the 19th hole, they would have concocted a few more libations to celebrate a great round or drown their sorrows over a bad one.  For what it's worth, here's a list of golf-inspired cocktails.  There's even a cocktail perfect for watching The Masters...

Partier's Golf Itinerary Of The Month

Kentucky Derby, Louisville KY

Hef at The Derby with The Girls Next Door

Start planning now to hit the May 7th running of the Kentucky Derby, along with some of Louisville's best links.  Here are two takes on how to tee it up, take in the ponies, and have a grand ol' time at the most quintessentially Southern party in existence.  See also:  Louisville's Urban Bourbon Trail

Fat Guy's Course Of The Month

St. Marlo, Duluth GA

Among the best publics in Atlanta, which is a great town for a golf buddy trip.

Guy Movie Golf Weekend-

Smokin' Aces Golf Weekend, Lake Tahoe, NV

This one's about as simple as a golf weekend can get.  Reserve the top-floor "Lynx" penthouse suite at the MontBleu Resort & Casino (formerly Caesar's Tahoe), which posed as Buddy Israel's Nomad Casino digs in the film.  Then get a bunch of hookers and as many illicit substances as one man (or four) could do in a weekend, a few decks of cards for card tricks, grab your clubs (as a weapon, or for actual golf), and head out for Tahoe.

Tour Spotlight

Harbour Town GL @ Sea Pines Resort, Hilton Head, SC

The Heritage comes right after The Masters in the Tour storyline.  It's hard to believe this classic tournament is on the brink of being no more, after long-time sponsor MCI/Verizon pulled out.  Still, it's always a treat to play where the big boys play(ed?).  Plus, any course with a Pete Dye/Jack Nicklaus pedigree, and a waterside 18th aimed at a lighthouse, is worth the trip and the dough.

BroBible's Top 15 Travel Destinations for Guys

  It's nice to dream, anyway.

"Traveling the globe in search of the next best party or crop of sultry women is an essential element to every man's youth. Horizons broaden, stories develop, and in some lucky cases you bring home an interesting rash or a stench that won't leave your index finger. Sometimes, however, your youth, your college budget, or your tightwad parents may get in the way of your nomadic bliss. But what if they didn't? Where would you go when you finally had money of your own to blow at will?"
